If the time line catches up to 2013, Bunta would have seen the R32 that came out 25 years ago!
Either way, I was expecting this a long time ago. I was thinking he'd be handed the keys to one.

Well, yes and no. First stage came out in 1999. The R32 GT-R debuted in 1988 and was 276 HP. And like a lot of the AWD cars it's a heavy sucker. In comparison to sports cars that had a little less HP and were a lot lighter I guess that would mean in Bunta's eyes it was slower. It depends on what kind of cars he had access to at the time the R32 GT-R was made. Bear in mind of course that if Takumi was 18 during the first stage. That would mean he was 7 or 8 when the car came out. So at the time of his race against Nakazato the R32 is already a 10 or 11 year old car. That would mean the R33 was at it's end and the R34 was ready to be built. However, Project D started 1 year or so after Takumi's first official race. Due to production limits though it only seems like a long time. In all actuality in terms of the shows timeline it's been less then 3 years. So Bunta was already in his late 30s or early 40s by the time of the first episode.
