Don't discount the value of autocross.
Myself and many others got their start there and I can tell you that most that have done autoX have much better skills at performance driving than those that have not.
Many of the basic skills learned at autox (even by just watching others), give you a much better base of skills for HPDE including how to use weight transfer for grip and car rotation.
Slow is fast is just one of those things you learn from Day1 in AutoX.
Think of it as compressed learning. You get to do alot of car input and feedback in that 4-5 minutes.
