If you're planning on lowering your car more than an inch, I would recommend coilovers.

You can do well with good ride quality and good performance with just springs on stock shocks with the few springs that lower an inch or less, but past that point there just isn't enough bump travel to work well on all roads/tracks.

There is a wide range of coilovers out there...some quality, some not so much (and not necessarily "better" than stock or quality springs). Depending on your goals there should be a good match for you in your price range.
