The thing you're not thinking about is yes, used rim and new tire and you break even whether or not you have the warranty - but with the warranty you then have to turn around and pay the warranty again! So one month out you're not broken even again. So unless you're destroying tires once a year you're losing money. You're much better off putting that same amount of money in a savings account. Even at 0.1% interest you're making money. Unless you drive something where a single tire costs $500 or something ridiculous like that. And since you're posting on the FR-S forum I'm fairly confident that you don't.

I understand where your coming from. But, flat tires are notorious down here...and 75%(yes it's an estimate...don't quote me on it) are side wall punctures. Which NO ONE will or should patch.
And honestly, I DO drive something where each tire is upwards of 400 dollars...but that's beside the point. 38" off road tires ain't exactly cheap. But I digress, since those don't have the warranty.
