In all seriousness, I have also broken a few studs on this and previously owned Subarus. I try to keep at least 2 extra studs in my garage now.

What I'm thinking happened (along with a few others in this thread) is the open ended nuts allowed rust to form on the stud where the nut threads weren't making contact with the stud threads. When you backed the nut off, it got caught in this rust and then "welded" the nut to the stud, forcing you to break the nut and stud off.

Keep your threads clean and this shouldn't happen. Also try to switch to closed nuts.
