Sure I'll buy in on 'environmental damage' but that's over half the point of paint anyway isn't it? To protect the car from the environment.

Not necessarily. You can chip paint without damaging plastic or metal beneath it. It's not made of metal or plastic after all. Though being on the roof is unusual but I've seen other weird stuff like black spots on a roof digging into paint.
Paint is there to protect from corrosion, not necessarily erosion. With modern water soluble paints, hard to say. Paint seems more about compliance with federal environmental mandates than protection these days. We do have cheap paint though, certainly wouldn't pass muster with Lexus.
I'd seriously recommend anyone getting a new twin letting it cure in your garage a week or two and applying a good sealant glaze like Menzerna after a quality detail or paint correction. It's not clear bra but I think it helps cheap paint like ours a bit when it's rather fresh and brittle.
