Comptech used to make positive displacement SC's for the NSX and that makes a lot more sense for the Hondas. Add some much needed low-end torque.

Don't think they intercooled them, but they only ran 6 psi or something...

I think part of the reason the centrifugals are popular is they probably make the cars FEEL insanely fast. Since they build boost in-step with motor RPM the car probably feels like it just gets more and more powerful as revs build. In an S2000, boost would keep building all the way to 9K, and that must feel amazing.

On a turbo making peak boost by say 3000 rpm and maintaining it all the way to redline it may feel like the power 'flattens-out' because of the natural power curve of the motor. However a well-designed turbo can make more peak boost far sooner than a centrifugal SC because the turbine can reach its operating rpm way before whereas the centri SC has to wait for the motor.

The power curve is much better on the turbo, but the centri SC probably feels like it just pulls and pulls and pulls.

As for the location of the IC in Subarus (and the 3SGTE's setups, I won't discriminate)... well they should have used a water-air if they really wanted to reduce the piping lag. The problems I have with locating an air-air IC there is that engine bay heat rises and even with their big hood scoops, they are trying to force air into an already high pressure location. There's far less air movement over it than for example the Evo's front mount with hood vents. High pressure location (front of car) air moves quickly, easily and in large amounts, through the IC and escapes out though the low pressure location on the hood.

If it was water-air (like the 3rd pic), they could mount a cooler/radiator for it in front of the car rather easily, not having to worry about piping lag and airflow. Negatives are cost, complexity (extra pump) and weight though.

Why are there are always compromises? grrr...
