To my understanding, ELM327 is only the chipset used in a wide variety of adapters, and there are a lot of Chinese ELM327 clones that may/may not work as well. Knowing the
specific model of the adapter you're using may be helpful.
For reference, I've used Torque on my BRZ with the OBDLink LX and also with a Vgate ELM327 clone, and both seem to have worked just fine.
