One thing that got me the first time I went was how confusing the course can be. I went all out the first run and got lost. Took some more runs to get familiar with it but by that time, it's too late. Now a days, I go really slow the first run. 2nd run, I experiment with gearing then try all out in 3rd run. I also record the runs and review them after each run  .

That's what has always bothered me with these events whenever I have seen them on youtube or when driving by.. it seems a forest of cones. But after talking to ppl at the DDT on the weekend, I get the impression that everyone starts out that way, and that we all get to be noobs at some point. I'll never know if I don't try it
