I had slight scratching in the shape of the OEM mud guards when I pulled them off at 1k miles. I would think any car with mud guards or an aero kit that had pieces sitting flush against a painted body panel would have that though.

To the OP. I believe they are equally effective. And by that I mean you'll still end up getting mud and dirt all over your car if you drive through rain puddles and muddy roads with either one. You may protect the 6-12'' behind the flap on the underside from rock chips, maybe. But after that, they are just an aesthetic.
