I haven't owned a Subaru, Toyota, Scion, or any variation thereof, but, what really interested me in the BRZ was that it was from the Subaru stable, as I wanted to consider Subaru for my next car, but had no desire to get anything other than a coupe. I might miss the AWD, but would rather give RWD a shot over FWD. So, put me in the "irrational" badge-makes-a-difference-to-me camp. Just like I believe an Audi is more valuable to me than a VW (assuming I am getting a German-built Audi, and not a Mexico-built VW).
