It's all preference though IMO. If you don't take care of something it will die earlier regardless..

Also depends on where you live I guess. I'm in Phoenix, so even with a garage and covered parking at work, the constant hot, dry air in summer I am fighting a losing battle no matter how well I care for the seats.
