After much deliberation and reading, I decided to just do this mod. And I'm not going back. I pride myself on being a smooth driver, and I didn't even need to adjust. My up shifts and downshifts just feel right after this mod. Timing feels so natural now. Reading through this thread addressed all my concerns.
I think the problem with the helper spring is that it makes the pedal return just a bit slower, so that grey area between clutch disengagement and engagement takes that much longer. That results in the rough takeoffs and jerky shifts.
I ended up taking the c-clip off by using two flatheads. One as a lever to hold it in place, and the other to push the opposite end out. Crude, but it worked.
As someone else mentioned, I did this, pedal height adjustment (1-2 mm above brake), Pentosin MTF2, and MTEC springs. "Car should have been like this from the factory"
