Dampers "give" when needed, and "push back" when needed.

Ever been on a kart over a rough surface? It's painful; everything is transmitted directly toward the chassis. Now imagine if you can go over that same rough surface, but to the kart's chassis, the surface is smooth. That's what suspension does.

Note how the wheel moves, but the chassis does not. Gopro mounts are not rigid; if the chassis is upset, you'll see it as camera shake.
