Agreed. This is way WAY overhyped. If you do a search for documented cases of IMS failures for the Cayman you will find a handful at best. If the internet didn't exist nobody would even know the Cayman had an IMS. It's a much bigger problem for older Boxsters & 911's. In fact there was a class action lawsuit against Porsche for those models' engines, and you can bet those lawyers would have included Cayman owners if the case could be made for them. But there wasn't enough proof that it's a significant issue for the Cayman.
Honestly, the best advice you can get for buying a Porsche is this: "buy the nicest S model you can afford." The base Cayman is still a nice car but for me, if I'm going to deal with the increased cost of owning a Porsche then I want increased performance as well. The base Cayman is no faster than an S2000.
