I will admit, I did break my left side axle once. With stock tires.
Stickier tires cost a lot more though, and they also wear much quicker. I'd be lucky to get 3k miles out of a set of my tires, I usually only manage around 2.5k. Try to find a middle ground where the benefit will still outweigh the cost.
