You can go German, as long as you have a mechanic who specializes in German cars and is trustworthy. My parents have owned only Japanese or German cars since I can remember, and all four BMW/Mercedes cars that they've had (1980 320i, 1985 300D Turbo Diesel, 1998 E320, 1999 CLK320) were always serviced by the same shop that had very reasonable prices. But yeah, any scenario outside of that will punish your pockets.
