Main purpose for the gear indicator in the manual is to achieve the best fuel economy. It's actually a shift indicator as well that tells you to shift up as soon as it hits 2000RPM. I guess the theory is you're manually changing gears so you should subconsciously know what gear you're in rather than an auto where it could be in any gear at any given time.
