I appreciate this post and the thoughts behind it. It's been a sort of closet dream of mine to buy a Boxster S for many years. I've always loved the car and in fact, I was living in Switzerland back in the mid 1990s and once saw an official (pre-production) Porsche test vehicle in Germany. Coming up behind me, I thought it was a 911. And when it passed me, I did a quick double take and I my heart just skipped a beat or two.
I think from that moment, they've always caught my eye.
But kids/mortgage/home repairs/retirement savings/529C accounts all sort of get in the way. And I realized I'd never be able to afford a new one without making a lot of sacrifices in other areas that I shouldn't. So for the last 3-4 years, I've been toying with the idea of picking up a low mileage Boxster coming off lease. But the price of maintenance and/or potential repairs has always made me a bit gun shy.
When I went to test drive the FR-S, it was more just out of curiosity. And after just a few minutes behind the wheel, I knew it was the right decision. I'm sure I still would have liked the Porsche more, but I'm not sure if I was ready to accept everything that went along with it.
So it's nice to know there are some former Boxster owners on this forum who are happy with their '86 and aren't looking back.
