Unfortunately it's for business, so I don't think they'd give me days off to drive and I'd rather save my vacation days for something else

You can take public transit to SF, takes about two hours one way but you really need to budget the whole day for the trip to have at least an enjoyable afternoon, busses and walking should be adequate to move you around the city, parking is miserable so if you drive find a garage and just do the rest of the day on foot/bus. Tahoe is about the same distance away but I don't think there's any public transit to get there (at least not convenient) could drive up enjoy the scenery, hiking, some nice restaurants, maybe some gambling if you're into that, but again I'd budget a whole day.
There's lots of little things to do here and there, googling 'what to do in sacramento' might pop something interesting up. There's also a couple karting places, I think there's a K1 location and I've heard good things about RPM, might be a good idea for 'work bonding' that's a coverable expense right?

Thanks for the tips, and you're right in that I'll only have the evenings to go explore. We have a K1 down here in Texas, so I might have to check out the track in Sacramento!
