Some disagree, 8,500 miles on an oil change shouldn't be a problem provided it's proper oil and a decent filter. Provided a non-harsh driving cycle (minimal short trips, at most moderate stop and go, non-dusty/icy climate) 10k on an oil change doesn't seem to be a problem.

I'd be more concerned if it was 1+ year between oil changes.

Edit: And it certainly isn't cause for an exploded engine unless there's some info missing.
