The 5x100 bearings were known for being weak on the WRX, but they are a good 6-700 lbs heavier than the brz. IIRC that is one of the reasons the STI went from a 5x100 to a 5x114.3 for MY 2005. I had a bearing go in my 2006 WRX at around 50k miles but that was after a good 60-70 autocrosses as well.

There are a lot of BRZ being tracked/autox'd around here and I haven't yet heard of a wheel bearing going.. sounds like something peculiar to orthojoe and his friend. Axles on the other hand seem like they will definitely fail.
