My father was able to take out the strip bolt and chase the threads and have it perfect in like 30 minutes all utilizing stuff he had in the garage. $300 at repair shop...free at my parent's garage...yeah, that's a win.

Doesn't surprise me. The bleeder is not something that needs a ton of torque or is a fastener. It just needs to thread down and seal. It needs no more torque than your smallest wrench can provide. I would have whipped out my tap and dye set and had it fixed to useable in no time.
