Everything's a compromise. Yes, of course Subaru or Toyota could make a highly strung engine but does their business model justify it? That is, would enough people purchase the high-strung model to justify the costs involved in making an engine that is both reliable and will meet the emission regs in 200,000 kilometers time? This is a cheap production motor car. (Yes , know cheap is highly subjective but it's like using the word "affordable". It's only affordable if you can afford it. And that's not meant to be funny.)
Instead of a power increase a better performance route would be to lower the car's mass. This would have wider ranging benefits than a power increase. Though more power and less weight would be ideal.
Inflation has raised the price. It is now my 6 cents.
