Question about wideband and software tuning

This is kind of a dumb question, but are widebands only used as a gauge? Like, they are only used for you to observe, not to actually implement into a tune as a variable correct?

So I guess I'm asking that if I were to install a wideband gauge, it does not connect to the car other than power and ground, and the tune is none the wiser.

I've been reading up on the technology but so far it's all been theory. Care to enlighten on a noob?
