Besides the foul smell, how would you know you had a problem? Many owners complained of a foul smell coming from the car and blaming it on the "break in". I'm wondering if this is the culprit?

You can just reach down under the plate with a paper towel and wipe to check. It certainly seems to be fairly prevalent, however I have a pretty early 2013 model and after 23k miles, there is still no leak on the stock part.
