They already have models that are less and affordable to the younger crowd. Now they have a spanking new, sweet new sports car, and they are planing to expand the brand to a demographic that has more income to spend. 2. Scion believes that thier current target demographic is both young and stupid, because they will go into more debt to get this car.
3. Affordable was a marketing buzz word to keep your interest, but the reality is they could not turn the profit they wanted selling it for 23K.

And if I remember they did say they were just going to barely break even.
