"Not buttery smooth" and "crunch/grinding" are two entirely different things. My car isn't entirely buttery smooth to shift, but it's positive, and fully engages and is buttery at times. No crunch unless I screw something up.

Sounds like your problem isn't in the transmission design but the transmission itself. Like you got a lemon or something. Take it to the dealer for a warranty replacement. Put in all the stock bushings unless you want to replace them again, as I doubt the dealership will leave them with the car. They'll remove them along with the transmission and give you all new stock bushings with the new transmission.
