I'm not sure anybody has clearly answered your question. PayPal offers purchase protection up to a certain limit on items you buy online and pay for using PayPal. If you don't get what you ordered, you can file a claim with PayPal to get the money back.
However, that's only if you send a
payment and not a
gift. If you use the gift option, you don't pay the transaction fee, but you're telling PayPal that you're actually giving the money to the other person, not buying something with it. Since there's no transaction as far as PayPal is concerned, they don't offer any protection for it.
Never use the gift option (unless you're actually giving someone money). The insurance is worth the 3% fee. That would have been $9 on this transaction.
I haven't sold anything using PayPal. Is there any legitimate reason for a seller to insist on the gift option?
