Awesome story. When I was 16, I got my Mom's 9 year old hand me down Plymouth Horizon. It was on it's last leg and was in the shop more than it was on the road. Probably didn't help that I drove it like a typical 16 year old. Just trashed the hell out of it.

When the Plymouth finally died (block cracked doing 70mph, which was the car's top speed), my Dad's friend who owned a used car lot said, "I have the car for your son". We went to see it one Saturday morning. I was convinced it was going to be some POS beater car. We got to the lot and it was a 3 year old Mazda RX-7 with under 20,000 miles on it. It looked showroom new. Not a scratch on it. My Dad's friend was anxious to get rid of it because he claimed, "It's a 5-speed and it's small, so no one wants it". He sold it to us for what he had in it.

Two years later I earned a scholarship to college thereby freeing up a big chunk of my college fund. My Dad told me I could wait until after I was out out college and he'd give me all the money, or he'd buy me a new car now. Stupid me...I opted for the car. A 1990 VW Corrado. Nothing was wrong with the RX-7 and I loved that car. All 100hp rear drive of it. But the Corrado had 158hp, fuel injection (yeah, no more manual choke!), and an electric spoiler...it was so cool!

A BRZ would have been near supercar performance back in those days.
