The reason I came up with this as opposed to the MAF flange between the bend and blow-off valve was due to Full Blown. Their initial setup with the MAF placed between a bend and blow-off valve caused instability with the MAF and the BOV would open, sometimes, at idle. Some guys had to run stiffer springs due to this.
The guys I use for tuning saw the two 45 degree angles with the MAF between them as a problem. This was proven when my fuel trims with the cruise control set would greatly fluctuate. It took a lot of logging and tweaks to get it resolved. On the dyno WOT pulls would read different g/s due to air that would move around the MAF as opposed to through. This was a problem that presented itself even more during cruising as the air could hit a bend and find its way around the MAF instead of thru it.
Ditching the 3" diameter in favor of 2.75" and going with a single 90 creates a smoother flow. Furthermore, the intercooler plumbing tapers down to 2.75" anyway so sticking with 2.75" all the way through made sense.
