No, I don't know 100% it will cause damage. Others have gone with out a diode with success. I placed a diode on mine as a safety precaution.
When placing a wire between two points you are opening a path for both to have power when one of them is on. A resistor only restricts how much power is going from one to the other. It doesn't stop the loop.
That's where a diode comes in. A diode is like a traffic conductor. It'll let power flow from one end to the other but if power tries to go the other way it'll stop it. Power flows from ringless to ring.
In my case my set up is: hid - diode - resistor - drl
Resistor only resists the amount of power.
Hid on : power flows from hid to diode to resistor to drl, powering both on. Since the ring of the diode is on the drl side, the diode allows the power to flow thru
Drl on: power flows from drl to resistor to diode. Since the ring is on the drl side, the diode acts as a wall to stop power from going into the hid.
Without the diode there when the drl turns on technically the hid has power too. It's not so much power that it'll harm the hid. But it's on, sorta.
My other post just means I won't run a wire from hid to drl with out a resistor/diode managing the power. It might (key term might) cause some harm.
Hopefully that make sense.

EDIT: I am no means an expert in this field. I've just had a few hands on experiences where I've messed up wiring due to not incorporating some fail safe to handle power. haha
