The BFL units you were looking at are ASIC for bitcoin. It's pretty much impossible for a single person to mine for that coin now. ASIC for scrypt (altcoins) are starting to come about. The units with a lot of hashing power are not out yet, but will be soon enough.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you buy GPUs now, you have to worry about price markup, power consumption, and heat.

It would end up being cheaper than a single 290X, hash roughly the same amount as the 290X, and require a fraction of the wattage. The problem is waiting.
