I think the most important things to realize when exercising are pretty basic:

Eat Healthy- By this I mean kick the processed junk as much as possible and keep a balanced diet

Enjoy Your Exercise: It is pretty simple, if you don't like what you're doing, you won't do it for long and fall back into bad habits.

Sleep!: I am a RPSGT, sleep tech, by trade. I can tell you this is one of the most overlooked facets of health. You can try to exercise and eat right all you want, but your body needs time to heal and regenerate. This isn't just your physical body but your mind as well. Give yourself enough time to sleep every day and don't be afraid to throw in a nap (less than an hour) once in awhile.

As far as making everything a pissing contest, don't get caught up in it. I've known plenty of guys that could push more weight around than I could, but couldn't keep up in real world activity. Having a big gas tank is just as important as big muscles.
As much of an anti crossfit guy i am i hate to admit that i would most likely enjoy the sport. I did a lot of intensive sports in the past. I think what i hate the most about crossfit and what causes me to dislike it are the people who strut around saying, "you got the physic but what can you do?"
