Spinning the rod could score the cup it's seated in and if there's any sealing there, damage it. Not too mention it's about a billion times easier to adjust the clutch as intended.
I'm not prepared to make sweeping statements about what spinning the rod would or won't damage. What I will say (and this comes from several years spent working on airplanes, 10+ years of working on cars, my lifespan helping my dad work on things, and my perspective as an engineering student; take it for whatever that's worth to you.)
Working on things in amanner they weren't intended to be worked on is, generally speaking, bad maintenance practice. When you're doing it for no benefit to the process and potential harm it's foolish. There is nothing gained by spinning the rod vs. popping the clip and spinning the bracket, so why do it?
