Yes a power bump is coming for the mid cycle refresh. The question is how much? Unless they introduce a TRD/STi version with 280+hp the twins will not be competing with the Z35.

Only the base mode IDx is supposed to have the 1,2-1,5l engine mated to the crappy CVT transmission because it was designed as a basic commuter car. The Nismo version is rumored to have the same 1.6l turbo 4 cyl from the juke.

"Nissan is currently proposing a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine. That powerplant could easily rival the 200 hp of the Toyota and Subaru duo. "

From the article you linked to:

http://www.carscoops.com/2013/11/new...idx-nismo.html

"The NISMO edition of the study is wider at 1.8 meters and gains a typical race inspired exterior and interior makeover, with bloated wheel arches, side exhausts, spoilers and lightweight 225/40 19-inch tires
As for the suggested powerplant, Nissan states: "To meet the high expectations for a powertrain equal to the task of propelling such a formidable car, one proposal from Nissan's engineers is the combination of a high-performance, eco-friendly 1.6L direct-injection turbocharged engine together with a sporty CVT with 6-speed manual shift mode and synchronized rev control."

Nissan has to do something with the Z. Its sales are declining, and without a cheaper model to replace it I think it would be safe to say its sales will continue to fall. The Z did its best when it was a $26k-$28k car.

They already dropped the price of the current 370Z to $29,990 usd. There's no reason to believe the Z35 will come in at a higher MSRP with, what the public will perceive as, a downgraded turbo 4cyl.
