The insurance companies job is to pay out as little as possible - this goes for health issues and/or vehicle value. Insurance is all risk vs reward, and they wont want to give up the "reward" because it cuts off their bottom-line profit. And if you think for a second that your insurance company "has your back," you're sadly mistaken.
If you are injured in ANY WAY, consider consulting with a lawyer. If they don't offer you a fair value for the vehicle, consider consulting with a lawyer.
I speak from experience, thank you very much. Correct, a lawyer is not free - but in the correct situation it gets you through a tirade of bullshit.

Sorry man, but only an idiot would hire a lawyer over a few hundred dollars, maybe a full thousand before his cut which is what were most likely talking about here. This wasn't a Lamborghini. If you read what I said I mentioned there is a time for a lawyer, a sore arm isn't one of them, unless you're wanting to milk the insurance which explains the price hikes every year even if you have a clean record.
A serious medical claim is another story, also mentioned. He doesn't need for the vehicle claim one unless they offer something absurd like $20k or less, which is what he owes. They will lowball, but not that badly.
