The FRB can't be compared to the Miata's first year. The car market was way different in 1989 when the Miata was revealed (along with the NSX) at the Chicago Auto Show. It was one of the few or only small, 2 seat convertibles at the time. It made quite a splash. More than 900,000 Miatas later FRB goes up against many sports cars. We'll see how it does. If keeps winning awards and racking up praise it should do well enough and draw average sport car/car buyers. Being down on power compared to other cars its class doesn't help. As does being dropped from Car and Drivers 10 Best list.

was a full-fledged phenomenon when it hit the market in mid-1989 as a 1990 model after making its public debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show.
Owners of those first Miatas can tell stories of being chased into parking lots and alleys by people so smitten that they absolutely had to know, "What is that!?" And the inevitable, "Where'd you get it? How much did it cost?"
Base price back then was $13,800.
