It is an abundance of caution based on past experience.
There isn't much to gain from fast shifts, other than accelerated wear for a minor drop in lap times. Learning to shift properly without mashing on the gas also improves driving smoothness. In fact, Mike's driving has improved dramatically since we got CSG BRZ 1.0.
