We run street touring and have the car set up about as much as I'd do it if I was just building a decent street car, though I probably wouldn't be buying a new set of tires every spring. And I'm willing to guess that the two-time national champion in our class has less money in his car than we have in ours (this is kinda sobering).
Building to a rulebook is what you have to do if you want to compare yourself head-to-head with the best in the business. That's what we wanted to do, so that's what we did. And without spending ourselves silly we have a very good local car that's not embarrassingly bad on the national level (31st & 34TH out of 39 last year) with drivers who still have some miles still to go on the learning curve. And we have a fun car that's very streetable still, the wife takes it to work and back a couple times a week here in the lovely DC area.
Since we're semi-serious about our little Miata project, I don't see us autocrossing whatever BRZFRS we wind up getting down the road. Our STS car is too competitive and too much fun to leave home.
