The Ford Duratec is based on the Mazda MZR engines which is an all aluminum version of the old ironblock Z or B series from Mazda, I forget which exactly. Each is built in their own respective factories and each modifies each design to suit their own purpose, it's based on the same basic design though. I believe the original design was influenced by Cosworth according to a rumor I heard.

B series! That's it. The engine is heavily Mazda derived due to Ford focusing more on it's v8 and even v6 lineup, instead importing the designs for a new 4 banger from Mazda. From what I understand, the MZR is just an aluminum redesign of the B Series. The Sky active engines, on the otherhand, are wholly different designs whereas the Ecoboost engines are based on the MZR/Duratec architecture.
If Ford ever put any money into designed the Mustang chassis, watchout! They only put million into the foxbody chassis since it's original design. Meanwhile Ford spends
billions on it's midsize cars. But that is what sells
