Yeah originally the Shinari was just to showcase their next design concept KODO. But just a few months ago Ikudo Maeda (chief mazda designer) said that the Shinari might become a reality because they are interested in entering the luxury market. But some speculate that the Shinari will replace the Mazda6. (i don't think so anyway). Either way...its a really exciting time for Mazda because they have new power and drivetrain technology and a new design language to play with. Especially since they announced that the Mx-5 is returning to its roots and having its own small lightweight chassy. Rather than being built from a previous car on its lineup ..aka rx8.
If the skyactive tech sells as well as they are projecting after the release of the new mazda6/mazda3/mx5. It would drive Mazda top execs into a corner to throw down plenty of R&D into the temporarily halted Sky-R (rotary) project.
