Based on your description, I may have had something similar in my wife's outback. I found that the noise was coming from the spring rubbing against the protective rubber pad inside the strut perch, every time the dampers were compressed, creating a "squeak" (like the noise you get from rubbing your finger on a clean, smooth surface). Squirting some silicone lubricant seemed to do the trick, although it would comeback after a month or so, in which I just spray it again
