Alloys do break if the impact is hard enough. Aluminum doesn't bend or stretch too easily. Steelies won't break but if they bend far enough the result is the same, the bead of the tire breaks and you're done. If the rock cuts the tire, as it seems it did for you, then the damage to the wheel is not relevant.
