I'm 22 and haven't had the longest car history but I feel that every car has its quarks. That's partly what I love about them. Gives them character in my book. Most new cars just feel so dull and boring.
Even with all the little complaints about the FRS and BRZ I still plan on getting one next year. Crickets? No big deal, low power? It has more than my current car it's not like I'm out to be the fastest anyways. Just to have a smile on my face when I go for a drive.
My first car was a 99' Mazda Protege. It was beat up had a bad clutch that slipped everywhere and old suspension. Interior was worn and had basic features such as crank windows, manual locks and A/C. The A/C never worked on any of my cars. I learned to drive in this car. Not the worst and not the best but good enough for sure.
My second car was a 86' FC3S. This was my first car purchase. I had to bring the clutch pedal back up with my foot in order to engage/disengage the clutch which turned out being a bad slave. It had electrical problems and its suspension was beyond worn. All easily repairable but this was before I had any hand in wrenching on anything. No A/C, non operational electrical bits in the interior. It taught me a lot about what to look for as far as buying a used car. But it ran great those problems aside. I sold it years ago and regret it, it was the perfect candidate for an LS swap.
My current car is a 91' Mazda Miata and is no where near perfect but at the same time I realize it's definitely not the worst. It has no power steering, no power locks, no power windows, no A/C, speakers lack any sort of bass, head unit is dying, it's uncomfortable as heck, small, impractical, makes all kinds of creeks and squeaks even with chassis mods, and it's slow on the freeways. I have to rev the crap out of it everywhere I go but I love it to death. Heel toe-ing in this car is amazingly easy and its just a blast to drive hard, even more so after mods. Having owned and driven it over the years has made me truly appreciate the simple things in a car. When I went to test drive an FRS just having an A/C in the car almost blew my mind, and in comparison it felt far more solid as a car. It reminded me of the miata if it where modern and way better looking lol (NC Miata excluded). I think people take current technologies for granted in general and should have cars that lack amenities if they think they have bad cars to see how good their car truly is. And compared to some of you guys I had it good. I look forward to owning a new car with "basic creature comforts" that will be more than adequate for me coming from what I'm used to. I honestly can't wait.
