I think their "86 is a midlife crisis car" is a bit immature and premature. I know where nissan is going with this, and it's going to be the price point. I'm sure this car in its production version will probably be in the low to mid 20k range. They'll try to undercut the price of the 86 twins, making it more appealing to a wider range of buyers (buyers who'd otherwise just get a civic or tc).
If nissan made a S16, it'd definitely be at or above the 86 price point, therein which would eat into 370z territory.
This move is a corporate response to the success of the twins packaged into a retro package to invoke nostalgia among nissan hopefuls. (in my opinion)
