Oh, I believe Humfrz; he's not kidding at all, @Missy. Even if he were joking, he is accurately describing a time and a people from America's not-so-distant past.

People often lived hardscrabble lives; they were tough, resilient, and self-reliant. Like Humfrz said, they only involved doctors for very serious matters. Gangrene threatened in this instance, but they took care of it on their own. They cut out the infected, necrotic tissue with a red-hot sterilized knife blade. They might have given Humfrz a belt of whiskey before the "procedure."

I suspect this country could benefit from more of that toughness. The Greatest Generation arose out of those times.
