And thanks to those who were on the final section for hanging with my friend and his overheated E36. After the second overheat we waited for the car to cool down much more substantially, topped it off with what water we had, ran it at idle to clear some of the air from the system, and he babied the car the rest of the way up to Skyline and from there it was easy cruising down to civilization. Turned out one of the plastic radiator hoses was completely cracked and broken. Good ol' German engineering!
