I think it depends on the quickness of the steering ratio - if you don't have to cross over your arms while driving then wheel-mounted makes more sense. F1 cars with their quick ratios have wheel-mounted paddles.

It's largely personal preference though from what I've read. I'm used to the G27 layout too, and would prefer it on a real car. Having to move your hand away from the wheel position it's naturally in when you want to downshift in the middle of a turn is an unneeded complication.
