Your first observation may be correct ..... the second theory .... not so much so ....

I figure a black car absorbs more heat from the sun, therefore making the engine compartment hotter, requiring the fans to run more, drawing more electricity that works the alternator more .... sapping power form the engine.

In addition, the passenger compartment will heat up more with a black car, requiring either the A/C to run more (sapping power) or the driver to run with the windows down, creating more drag .... so there ....
